CURRENT ROUNDTABLE (SRRR 4)

Dear ISRRA members,

The 2025 ISRRA Stroke Recovery and Rehabilitation Roundtable (SRRR IV) face-to-face meeting will be held in Aberdeen, Scotland, on November 23–24, 2025, immediately prior to the UK Stroke Forum.

In May 2024, we made a call for roundtable topic proposals. These were reviewed by an expert panel, which resulted in 4 selected topics.

Topic 1: A framework to guide when and how to involve people with lived experience in stroke recovery research

Roundtable aim(s):

To develop a roadmap for involving people with lived experience of stroke in rehabilitation research and related activities. The team will work to achieve consensus on the essential characteristics/features of ‘good’ involvement, how this can be reported and how involvement and impact can be evaluated. We aim to establish a framework of ‘what, when, how and with whom’ in relation to involving people with lived experience in all forms of stroke recovery research.

Chair: Elizabeth Lynch, Co-Chair: Lisa Kidd

Topic 2: Somatosensory interventions to improve sensory capacity, sensorimotor control and function after stroke

Roundtable aim(s):

1. To systematically review and synthesise the evidence for somatosensory assessment and effectiveness of somatosensory interventions after stroke, to inform international stroke guidelines.

2. To provide a consensus statement based on expert opinion, published evidence, and input from stroke survivors, carers, and stroke clinicians.

3. To plan future research activities based on identified gaps in the evidence, input from major stakeholders and consensus.

Chair: Ali Aries, Co-Chair: Leeanne Carey

Topic 3: Molecular biomarkers in clinical stroke recovery and rehabilitation

Roundtable aim(s):

1. To establish consensus around currently recommended genetic and molecular biomarkers of stroke recovery,

2. To present a call to action for the neurorehabilitation community to collectively engage in the most promising genetic and -omics avenues for future study, and

3. To provide expert opinion on topics surrounding the collection of genetic and molecular biomarkers to encourage engagement and ensure high-quality studies.

Chair: Matthew Edwardson, Co-Chair: Robynne Braun

Topic 4: High dose high intensity training at home

Roundtable aim(s):

1. Identify open questions and key barriers for the implementation of remote home-based rehabilitation services.

2. Develop recommendations and requirements of systems delivery for translating best evidence-based practices in rehabilitation (as opposed to an insufficient status co) into a home-based setup, using technology to bridge the gap between evidence and reality.

Chair: Meret Branscheidt, Co-Chair: John Krakauer

Third Stroke Rehabilitation and Recovery Research Roundtable (SRRR 3)

SRRR-3 Co-chairs: Kate Hayward and Gert Kwakkel

The Stroke Recovery Roundtables (SRRR) seek to collectively advance the science of stroke recovery globally. Similar to the previous two SRRR’s, the third roundtables address four topic areas:

1. Outcomes of mobility: co-chairs Gert Kwakkel (Netherlands) and Geert Verheyden (Belgium)

2. Fatigue after stroke: co-chairs Coralie English (Australia) and Gillian Mead (UK)

3. Control intervention: co-chairs Kate Hayward (Australia) and Catherine Lang (USA)

4. Non-invasive brain stimulation: co-chairs Jodi Edwards (Canada) and Christian Gerloff (Germany)

Stroke Recovery and Rehabilitation Roundtable SRRR 3 2022 Vienna

For a period of 2 years (2021-2023), over 60 multidisciplinary and international group members from more than 20 countries are meeting in person and via videoconference to undertake consensus building efforts within each topic. Like SRRR1 and SRRR2, there will be a number of publications that arise from this work, which will be available in late 2023.

The SRRR 3 have already presented their work at the European Stroke Congress, 4–6 My 2022 in Lyon France:

Scientific Session 11 (Nursing/AHP Session) “ISRRA: Global collaborations transforming stroke: The International Stroke Recovery and Rehabilitation Alliance (ISRRA)”

And convened in person again in Vienna in December of 2022 at the World Congress for Neurorehabilitation (WCNR)
